VILLAGE CARD CLUB BOARD OF DIRECTORS

SEMI-ANNUAL MEETING MINUTES

JUNE 9, 2005

President Kathy Harris called the meeting to order at 12:30 P.M.

A moment of silence was observed for our club members who are no longer with us and our men and women in the Armed Forces.

The minutes of the June 3rd board meeting were approved as posted.

GAME MANAGER, Andy Cosby, stated that his job is to come up with new games that will be fun or interesting in order to entice more frequent play.

The Thursday afternoon Club Tournament was tried and the majority of players preferred to leave the games the way they were.

This year we have run a STaC tournament, two Board-a-Matches, a Money Game with individual movement, a Mixed Pairs and the Junior-Senior Prom.  The Prom attracted 16 tables (a record) for a Swiss Team game on a Wednesday.

Our table count has been higher every month this year over last year.

Coming events include:

A 3-day morning Bracketed Knockout is being proposed to be held in November.

All of that is in addition to 14 shuffle-deal-and-play games each week.  So, if you like variety in your life, we’ve got it.

Andy acknowledged the hard work of our regular and backup directors.

MEMBERSHIP, Teri LaBove reported that we have 726 paid members and 40 who have not paid at this time.  21 of our members are over 85, up five from last year.

PURCHASING, Bill Taylor stated that all of our supplies are in good shape.

DIRECTOR-AT-LARGE—Kathy Harris reported for Marilyn Biegler.  The Newsletter will be out next week and can be found on the website.  There will be copies at the club.  After you have read it, please return it for others to read.

VICE PRESIDENT, Dick Condon reported that a reimbursement check for class expenses was received from Unit 161 and District 10 in the amount of $1,542.

The winter 2005 classes had a total of 44 in the two Club classes and 20 in the Diamond class.  27 of those in the Club classes have gone on to Bridge Plus.  There was a net profit of $1,858 from the classes.

The VCC brochure has been completed and we hope to reach out to interested people.  1,000 plus have been given to the Hot Springs Realtors Association who will send them to prospective buyers.  They were also available at the VCC Sectional Tournament, the LR Tournament of Roses and are at the P.O.A. office.

CLUB MANAGER, Richard Robertson’s report was read by Kathy Harris.  To date this year 3,773 tables of bridge have been played, up 353 from last year.

“Please be nice!  A quote from our Club Manager.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT:  Marcy Jordan told us that new people are the life blood of our club.  We are the ambassadors.  She has been attending all of the Newcomers’ Coffees promoting bridge and the Village Card Club.

Encourage our players to occasionally move up and play in an advanced strata game.

Marcy is in charge of all free plays and stated that they can be purchased from her to give as gifts.  What better way to please a bridge player?

TREASURER, Allan Walker—The first five months of last year we lost $3,000.  After the 50 cent increase in playing fees put into effect January 1st, we had a gain of $7,000 for the first five months of 2005.  VCC equity in December 2004 was $25,000 and is now $33,000.

Connie Fitch reported on the 2005 Star Spangled Sectional Tournament.  Co-chairmen, Connie and Marilyn Biegler thanked all 50 plus committee workers, bakers of the wonderful cookies and breads and all of the VCC players who supported the tournament with their play.  There were 423 ½ tables of bridge played, up from last year.  270 Village Card Club players participated and there were 64 players from Little Rock.

$1,000 in tips was raised for our Teen Challenge caddies.

Profit from the tournament was $3,967.

President, Kathy Harris, reported that Connie and Marilyn have agreed to be co-chairman for the 2006 Spring Fling Sectional Tournament and a number of the same committee chairman have also agreed to help.  It is hoped that some of our newer players will want to be a part of the tournament planning and will see Connie or Marilyn.

Hank Chakoian asked the president about the Better Bridgers.  Kathy Harris stated that they have between 12-15 tables each week.

The Sally Blevins trophy is awarded to the non Life Master with less than 400 points who earned the most points the previous year.  For the second year in a row the trophy goes to Bob Rogers.

A remote controlled, wall mounted time clock was presented to the club from Wen and Barbara Wenger in appreciation for the thousands of hours of work that goes into our club.  This gift has been on our directors’ “wish list” for a long time.  Thank you, Wen and Barbara.

Jane Zambell and Kathy Harris presented the Rose Memorial plaque, a memorial to our many friends who are no longer with us.

Motion to adjourn was made by Fran Banks, seconded by Ken Drake and unanimously approved by the membership.

Respectfully submitted by:

Marilyn Biegler, Acting Secretary                                    Subject to board approval
