Job Description - Game Director

 

The Game Director:

1.  Shall personally greet new players and guests and introduce them on the microphone.

2.  Shall select the game movement best suited for the number of players registering giving special emphasis to lower strata in terms of seeding and balancing the field.  Follow the ACBL guidelines for Stratifying Your Club Games. Our policy is to maximize the masterpoints awarded consistent with ACBL and VCC guidelines. In case of multiple sections, the boards must be duplicated and scored across the field for premium events such as Club Championships. If boards are not duplicated for multiple sections, only section awards may be awarded.

3.  Shall see that the game is run in a professional manner and that all rulings are made in accordance with ACBL’s Laws of Duplicate Contract Bridge.  To this end, he/she should make the Laws available to the players for their review and should always carry the Law Book when called to a table.  If an incorrect ruling is made, it should be corrected as soon as possible.

4.  Is fully responsible for all aspects of the game, including playing conditions, from the time the game begins to its conclusion.

5.  Shall approve all announcements to be made and ensure that they be kept brief and to the point.  Any announcement not related to bridge activities must be approved by the Club Manager or President. The director should be positive and enthusiastic about special games. Every special game has something extra going on that should be communicated, such as more masterpoints, red points, etc. Directors should encourage players in a positive manner to support all club games, VCC education activities and to encourage non-open game players to play up to the next level.

6. Produce the following reports:

    1. Recap sheet to be posted in the hall for one week.
    2. Recap sheet posted on the web site.
    3. Confirmation Slips (PCON) for non-ACBL members with under 20 MP or NAP qualification slips.

7.  Shall coordinate disputes regarding scoring with both pairs involved prior to any scoring changes.  If a scoring error is found after the scores have been posted, the Director should change the score or notify the Club Manager. Corrections are permitted for a 24 hour period. The Director of the game at which the disputed score occurred must approve any score change. Directors must keep the game computer score cards for one week and make a backup of the game which will be retained for one month.

8.  May assume, at his/her discretion, the duties of Clerk, in which case he/she shall perform all the appropriate responsibilities.

9. General guidelines: The goal in a successful* open game is to play 24 to 28 boards in three hours. The goal in a limited masterpoint or advanced newcomer game is to play 22 to 24 boards in less than three hours. The goal in a successful* newcomer game is to play 18 to 22 boards in three hours or less.

* Successful The people had a good time, played a sufficient number of boards and they're coming back!

The timer has 2 purposes:

1. Keep the game moving.
2. Guarantee the players sufficient time to complete play.

The following times should be used by all directors:

2-boards per round -     14 min         15 min (longer if necessary)
3-boards per round -     20 min         21 min
4-boards per round -     25/28 min    28/30 min

Do not call the round early. The players deserve a comfortable game without having to rush.
